Will C. Miller, a Houston businessman and Real County rancher, assisted immeasurably in making a college education possible for area students. As Mr. Miller spent more and more time on his ranch near Leakey, he became interested in offering scholarships to Leakey graduates who attended Southwest Texas Junior College.
Will C. Miller Memorial Library
Upon visiting the Southwest Texas Junior College campus, Mr. Miller became interested in the development of the college facilities. He visited the campus several times while residing in the area. When he returned to Houston to live, and at the onset of failing health, Mr. Miller made Southwest Texas Junior College a beneficiary of a part of his estate. This bequest was used to benefit the many students who sought higher education at Southwest Texas Junior College and also to honor the memory of the one who gave generously toward the education of so many.
Mr. Miller’s gift made possible many needed improvements in college facilities. Most significantly, the inside of the library was remodeled, and was subsequently named the Will C. Miller Memorial Library.
The Will C. Miller Memorial Library, previously called The Library Building, was formally dedicated October 16, 1981. A bronze plaque in honor of Mr. Miller was placed at the entrance to the building, which reads as follows:
Dedicated to the Memory of Will C. Miller in Grateful
Appreciation for His Interest in Education and Generous
Support of Southwest Texas Junior College
