Distinguishing Books & Periodicals

To cite reprinted material, you need to be able to identify what the original source is.  Is it a periodical (journal, magazine, newspaper) or a book.  The following clues will help you distinguish the two.


  • May have an editor (ed., eds., edited by)Publication year ONLY
  • City of publication (New York, London, etc.)
  • Name of publisher (Bantam, Simon & Schuster, etc.)
  • May have an edition number


  • Publication date is a month/season + year
  • Volume & issue numbers
